Restoration work is now underway in one of the most ancient tanneries in the world, in the theatre district in Pompei. Discovered between 1873 and 1874, the tannery was then uncovered entirely by Amadeo Maiuri in the 1950s. The building, made up of the manager’s home and by the areas used for operations, presents a portico divided into six compartments, separated by five partitions, where the drain that brought the water to the jar (now walled up) was once found.

Fifteen circular brick basins, refinished in lime mortar with crushed pottery, with an entrance and drain valve, is found in the area behind. Twelve of these were used for the vegetable tanning of large hides, and three were used for smaller hides. Under the central portico, the first phase of operations took place (the skinning of the animal), followed by the immersion in the vats. Here the hides were treated with tannin. On the level above the first was likely a drying room, where the hides were laid out to dry.

At the end of the courtyard is the triclinium with a central panel once decorated with a famous mosaic, which now resides at the Naples Archeological Museum, which with a naturalistic representation of a skull and the mason’s tools, allegorically expresses the transience of life and death’s inevitability.
The layout was studied by a group of French archeologists led by Jean-Pierre Brun, current director of the Centro Jean Bérard in Naples, a specialist in ancient artisan techniques.

The collaboration continues between the Special Archeological Superintendence of Naples and Pompei and the National Tanning Industry Union, begun in 2008 with the signing of the agreement for restoring the Porta Stabia tannery complex, in the theatre district. The restoration, now underway, was designed and undertaken by the Superintendence with the contribution of the Union.

The Pompei Excavation Auditorium recently hosted the 2009 assembly of the EU Confederation of Tanners, with 12 member states participating. Over the course of the event, the serious international crisis was discussed, and what repercussions this has had on the field, with hefty reductions in the workforce and a dimming of prospects. The site of the encounter provided the right occasion to remember the historical value of tanning work, thanks in part to the ceremonial visit to the Pompeian tannery under restoration. The participants’ intention, therefore, is to examine and promote the long-standing culture of this profession. An important part of the meeting was dedicated to technical and scientific aspects, both for the continual innovation sought by the companies, as well as for the carrying out of EU directives on environmental impact in the area.
